Some commissions arrive with a story attached. This one came with the sound of engines, late-night races, and a father who knew exactly what would delight his son.
Our client had gifted his son — a die-hard Formula 1 fan — a remarkable set of 3D-printed maps of every F1 circuit from the season. Each circuit was printed to scale, meaning no two were the same size or shape, just as in real life. The brief was clear: this wasn’t just about protecting the pieces, it was about creating a display worthy of the sport. The Design Brief The idea was to present the entire season as one cohesive artwork. Beneath each circuit, the client wanted: The national flag of the host country The official circuit name, cleanly and consistently presented All of this needed to sit in perfect balance with the sculptural quality of the 3D maps themselves. To elevate the piece further, the client requested a floating mount, creating visual separation between the artwork and the frame. This subtle detail adds depth and shadow. A Technical Challenge This was not a standard framing job. Each circuit map differed in size, orientation, and footprint. Scaling them accurately while maintaining harmony across the overall layout required meticulous planning and precise measurement. In total, the frame required 26 individual apertures, all cut with exacting tolerances to ensure perfect alignment. Every decision — spacing, mount depth, aperture sizing, and material choice — had to be resolved before a single cut was made. There was no room for adjustment once production began. The floating mount added another layer of complexity, demanding absolute accuracy so that the reveal was consistent throughout the piece and the structure remained visually light despite its scale. The Finished Piece The result is a striking, highly personal artwork that captures an entire Formula 1 season in a single frame. It balances technical precision with visual drama — much like the sport itself. More importantly, it transforms a thoughtful gift into a lasting, display-worthy centrepiece that celebrates passion, performance, and design. This commission is a perfect example of what bespoke framing is all about: responding to the uniqueness of the artwork, respecting the story behind it, and applying craftsmanship to create something truly one-of-a-kind. If you have a project that doesn’t fit standard sizes — or standard thinking — we’d love to help bring it to life.
