Preserving a Piece of Railway History - Conservation Framing for a Vintage Cigarette Card Collection8/5/2026 At Artscape Framing we are often entrusted with items that hold far more than monetary value — they carry stories, memories, and family history. Recently, a client brought us a fascinating collection of vintage railway cigarette cards that had originally been collected from cigarette packets over 80 years ago.
These charming and highly detailed cards had been carefully preserved through generations, and our client wanted to honour the original collector by transforming them into a beautifully framed display piece to be gifted and enjoyed for years to come. A Collection Full of Character Railway cigarette cards were once incredibly popular collectables, offering miniature works of art and snapshots of Britain’s rich railway heritage. Over time, complete collections have become treasured keepsakes, often passed down within families. This particular collection had remarkable sentimental value, making conservation and presentation equally important throughout the framing process. Carefully Planning the Layout With a collection of this nature, precision is everything. We carefully mapped out the spacing and positioning of each individual card to create a balanced and visually engaging layout. The aim was to allow every card to be appreciated individually while ensuring the overall presentation felt cohesive and elegant as a complete framed piece. Conservation Framing Techniques Protecting the cards was an essential part of the project. Rather than mounting the cards directly, we used clear archival adhesive corners to hold each piece securely in place without causing damage. This conservation-friendly approach means the cards remain fully intact and can be removed in the future if ever required, helping preserve both their condition and historical integrity. The Difference Artglass Makes To complete the frame, we used premium Artglass — a museum-quality glazing solution designed to dramatically reduce reflections while also providing excellent UV protection. The clarity of the glass allows the intricate detail and colours within the cards to be viewed beautifully from every angle, without distracting glare. At the same time, the UV protection helps safeguard the collection against fading and ageing over time. Framing That Preserves a Legacy Projects like this are a reminder that bespoke framing is about far more than simply displaying an item on a wall. It is about preserving memories, protecting history, and continuing the story behind a treasured collection. Whether it is vintage memorabilia, family heirlooms, original artwork, or collectables, thoughtful conservation framing ensures these pieces can continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
